A method for the accurate determination of the faint end of the luminosity function is described for the case of cluster galaxies. This method involves measurement of the redshifts of complete magnitude-limited samples of galaxies and segregation of the measurements according to morphological type. A straightforward observational test is proposed which can distinguish between the various luminosity-function models. The results expected for two qualitatively different luminosity functions, the Schechter (1976) function and a Gaussian function, are calculated and evaluated. The results suggest that the Gaussian may be too simple a functional form or that the luminosity functions for field and cluster galaxies are different.
