The nighttime positive bay-type perturbations in the horizontal component of a ground-level geomagnetic field have been compared for the cases of three locations in the same local time sector. The results indicate that the night-time positive bays at low and middle geomagnetic latitudes do not originate, in general, in the overhead ionospheric dynamo region currents. It is suggested that the positive bays may be caused primarily by magnetic field-aligned currents.
