The gravitational micro-lensing effect arises from the disturbance of single stars in a deflecting galaxy. This paper presents a simplified model of the effect together with a few calculated light curves. During three weeks in April 1988 an intensive observational search was carried out at ESO, La Silla, Chile, using the triple quasar PG 1115 + 080 as a candidate. Due to the very low estimated probability of finding the effect, it was not surprising that the observed light curves did not show the large flux variation expected from the effect. However, the subtraction of observed magnitudes from two filters showed a significant difference between the strongest component and the two weaker components of the triple quasar. This difference might be due to micro-lensing but it can equally well be explained by selective absorption.
