An E-region ionization source additional to short-wave solar radiation was studied during a solar-eclipse period. Near the total eclipse phase, the electron density at the E-layer maximum did not depend on geographic location. In addition, the intensity of the additional source was found to increase with increasing solar and geomagnetic activity, amounting to 5-90 percent of the intensity of ionization by solar radiation.
