The problem of the motion of a satellite under the gravitational influence of three fixed masses is solved in a specialized case for an orbit of small inclination. A cylindrical coordinate system is selected such that two of the masses are located on the Z axis with the third mass at the origin, which coincides with the center of mass of the first two masses. The gravitation potential obtained by this analysis is used to approximate that of Jupiter in the investigation of the motion of the Jovian satellite Amathea. A comparison of these calculations with observations indicates that in some instances the orbits of the problem of three masses may be taken as intermediate orbits in the study of satellite motion.
