We are proposing medium resolution spectroscopy to: (i) test the hypothesis that the enhancement of the quasar density in large quasar groups (LQGs) is accompanied by a corresponding enhancement of the mass (galaxy) density; and (ii) determine the galaxy halo environment associated with the quasars, and thus test the hypothesis that quasar formation is favoured in the densest regions. We have already partial results, and find 12 MgII absorbers coinciding with the Clowes & Campusano (1991) LQG, with preliminary evidence for a structure formed by seven of them. We propose to double the redshift space coverage in our complete MgII survey within the area of the LQG. The field covers 18h^-1 × 18h^-1 Mpc^2 at the redshift of the LQG. We shall test for an enhancement of the quasar absorber (galaxy halo) density within the LQG and test their correlation with the member quasars by comparison with a complete MgII absorber survey taken from quasars across the sky. This will allow us to infer the state of halo gas in a region that has favoured the formation of the quasars.
