The application of new high-resolution laboratory data for iron, covering the region 1800 to 9000/cm, to the identification of many weak lines on high signal-to-noise-ratio solar photospheric spectra, is discussed. The spectra emitted by iron hollow cathodes with three different carrier gases (He-Ne-Ar) are recorded with the Fourier transform spectrometer on Kitt Peak. Comparisons between the spectra of iron and the spectra of nickel and of chromium recorded with the same carrier gas and between the iron spectrum and the KPNO solar spectrum drawn at the same scale are considered. The results are presented in tables.
