Chemical modelling of diffuse interstellar clouds is capable of providing a complete description of their physical condition. However, in the present state of astronomical and chemical data, ambiguities arise and unique descriptions cannot be obtained. This paper argues that a logical approach to chemical modelling is required, and offers a simple procedure which minimizes the ambiguities arising in diffuse cloud models. The case of interstellar CN is illustrated.
