A survey of all Flux Transfer Events (FTEs) which were observed both exterior and interior to the dayside magnetopause by the AMPTE-UKS (Active Magnetosphere Tracer Explorer United Kingdom Satellite) during its five months of operation (Aug. 1984 to Jan. 1985) is presented. This survey considers these events from a statistical approach and this complements previous detailed studies of particular events. It extends previous statistical surveys by including consideration of the plasma wave data. The survey is based on the Saunders and Rijnbeek catalog for the UKS FTEs which include 74 events detected on 24 orbits using the Rinjbeek et al. 1984 criteria to identify the FTEs. In local time these FTEs extend from mid-afternoon to the nightside of the dawn meridian. It was found that the probability of occurrence of FTEs at low latitude is higher than at a slightly higher latitude. Some 80% of the recurrence of FTEs within the same orbit were detected within 20 min. The typical duration of the FTEs is found to be about 2 min; however, this value can vary from a few tens of sec up to 5 or 6 min (although the lower limit is related to the selection criteria). The waves associated with FTEs were also investigated using data from the UKS stepped frequency analyzer for the frequency range 0.5 to 132 kHz and the UKS autocorrelator which covers the frequency range 0.11 to 3.9 kHz. Most of the 37 events detected in the boundary layer did show a clear enhancement in wave power while very few of the 23 magnetosheath events have shown an enhancement in wave activity. However, in none of the FTEs surveyed does the amplitude of all waves exceed one millivolt per meter, such amplitude is too small for these waves to have a primary role in the processes of dissipation and reconnection. Substantial wave power might be carried by lower frequency waves, for example at ion gyrofrequency or lower hybrid frequency, which were not explored by the UKS wave experiment. The wave data show that the strongest waves were observed near local noon.
