The results of spectroscopic observations of 42 IRAS sources, all detected at 25, 60 and 100 μm, and with a spectral index mainly in the range -1.75 < α(60, 25) < -1.5, are presented. Six Seyfert 2 galaxies and several isolated extragalactic H II regions are identified. The most interesting objects described in this work are the bright nearby Seyfert galaxies NGC 1125 and 5995, the ESO 513-IG11 system (in which five condensation can be distinguished, each one being a giant H II region) and ESO 45-G15, a starburst galaxy with strong Wolf-Rayet emission features. The luminosity and structure of some of the brighter objects were investigated by means of UBV(RI)c photometry and CCD observations. The infrared properties of the galaxies are discussed.
