The range of photographic density, spectral resolution, and suitability for photometry of films made from Schmidt telescope plates was assessed. A combination of intermediate positive and copy negative which gives the optimum reproduction of original objective prism plates is found. It is shown that while loss of density at the bright end, corresponding to 0.6 magnitude, cannot be avoided, the copied spectra below the limiting density level can be used for spectral classification and for photometry over a range of 3 or 4 magnitudes. For the identification of objects with unusual spectra such as emission line stars or quasars, where photometry is not essential, the curtailment of the effective density range is less severe.
