The density and thermal balance of the Martian ionosphere were investigated and compared with the observational data from Vikings 1 and 2. The effects of diffusion and thermal conduction perpendicular to the assumed magnetic fields were included. An analysis of the thermalization of energetic O2(+) produced by the major ion neutral reactions was developed and presented.
