Spectral-line formation under the assumption of comblete frequency redistribution is studied for a plane-parallel atmosphere containing a nonuniform distribution of internal emission sources. Solutions for the emergent intensity profiles and surface values of the net flux and source function are all given in terms of functions defined as weighted moments of an auxiliary functionΦ(τ;τ0). These functions include the generalizedX- andY-functions. The computational problem is then reduced to an initial-value problem consisting of a coupled system of first order ordinary differential equations. A description of the numerical calculations is given and several graphical solutions are included to illustrate emergent intensity profiles of Doppler broadened lines.
