Out of more than 67 blazars detected by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton-Gamma-ray Observatory (CGRO) during its nine year lifetime, only four are of the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object (HBL) class. The Gamma-ray emission in the EGRET energy range from HBLs is widely accepted to be arising from the comptonization of the synchrotron-photons in the jet. The resulting spectrum is believed to be hard, with rising contribution from higher energies in the broadband. We did a comprehensive analysis of the entire HBL data from the mission and found that there is more to this picture. The spectrum ranges from hard to soft in the two sources Mrk 421 and PKS 2155-304, during the multiple epochs that they were observed in. Moreover, the spectral dependence on flux is radically different for these two sources. The range of spectral indices observed throws open the intriguing prospect of a convex break in the broadband spectrum of these sources in the EGRET energy range. These results challenge our understanding of the physical mechanisms that are believed to operate in the jets emanating from the nucleus of these active galaxies and the composition of the seed photons responsible for the inverse-Compton emission.
