The author reports on evidence for interstellar absorption due to the foreground spiral arm of NGC 5194 (M51) in the spectrum of the nucleus of NGC 5195. The presence of such absorption was hinted at by Spinrad (1973) but not confirmed. The Na I D lines in the spectrum are anomalously strong and might be accounted for by interstellar dust in the arm projectd against the nucleus of NGC 5195.
