A hypothesis on the intersection by the comet of a tangential discontinuity in the solar wind velocity field is formulated on the basis of photographs taken in January 1986. The estimates show the velocity change in the discontinuity to be about 20% of the solar wind velocity. Some features of the discontinuity prove similar to those of atmospheric fronts.
