Using interplanetary scintillation (IPS) data obtained from the Cambridge 81.5 MHz array, an activity index is developed in which it is possible to identify (1) discrete structures, most likely relating to transient density enhancements, and (2) periodic activity, relating to corotating interplanetary structure. Significant, yet weak correlations are found between the index and geomagnetic activity. Results suggest that the pursuit of such an index could result in a valuable tool for the prediction of geomagnetic events and highlight several potential future developments.
