HR 9049 is a single line spectroscopic binary with an orbit determined by Archer and Feast (1958). New seven colour photoelectric measurements in the Geneva photometric system reveal that this object is also an EA-type eclipsing binary composed of two main sequence B-type stars (approximately B6 and B9).
The previous spectroscopic value of the period is incompatible with the orbit of the eclipsing system. A new period determination by discrete Fourier transform shows that another possible period suggested by Archer and Feast is the correct one. The new orbital elements are:
P0 = 2.445 094 d T0 = JD 2 434 998.906 e = 0.035 V0 = 9.9 km/s ω = 92°6 K1 = 86.0 km/s asini = 2.89 × 106 km f(m) = 0.161 sun
This study of HR 9049 is an instructive case of period determination, because one clearly sees how spurious periods can be induced by the spacing of the data in time.
