Infrared photometry can reveal cool companions to hot sub-main-sequence stars to very faint limits of luminosity. About 100 white dwarfs have been surveyed at 2.2 microns for very low mass red dwarf companions in a search complete to Mv about 21. Very few new companions were found, none with Mv greater than 15. This does not appear due to either selection effects or evolutionary effects on precursor systems. The cumulative body of evidence suggests termination of the hydrogen-burning main sequence at Mv equal to about 17.5 Mbol about 12.8. The survey and other results indicate the luminosity function declines for Mv greater than 13, with a resulting decline in the mass function. The mass density in objects of M less than 0.2 solar mass unaccounted for in the Luyten luminosity function is approximately equal to or less than 0.005 solar mass/cu pc in the solar neighborhood. It is suggested that a massive Galactic halo is not composed of substellar-mass objects; however, if it is, such a population could be identified with the Space Telescope without confusion from similar disk population objects.
