The available data on the far-infrared luminosity of hot-centred molecular clouds have been combined with the known distribution of molecular matter to derive a luminosity function for these star-forming clouds. The statistical method of estimating this function from the observed sample of clouds is discussed in some detail. The derived function is used to estimate the total infrared luminosity in the Galaxy contributed by these discrete sources; the result agrees encouragingly well with that obtained from radio data.
