We have used J-H-K_s magnitudes of stars from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) combined with parallaxes from the Hipparcos project to construct an infrared color-magnitude (MK_s versus J-K_s) diagram of nearby stars. Stars in common between the two projects are at the faint end of the Hipparcos sample, and at the bright end of the 2MASS sample. In general these stars are relatively blue: the median spectral type of stars on the main sequence is F. The cleanest cmd results from restricting the sample to those stars with the best photometry and smallest errors in the parallaxes. In this paper we report results from our preliminary analysis: a comparison with cmds of nearby open clusters also obtained with 2MASS and with theoretical tracks.
