An equation has been derived for computing the ratio of the relative concentrations of homologs which contain an odd number of carbon atoms to those which contain an even number. This ratio is called the odd-even predominance, or OEP, to distinguish it from a similar ratio currently in use, the carbon preference index, or CPI. The new measure was developed to eliminate mathematical limitations found in the CPI function when attempting to extend the concept. The OEP function has been used in the form of a plot vs. carbon chain length to characterize the series of normal alkanes separated from crude oils, ancient rocks, and modern sediments. If C i is the relative weight per cent of a n-alkane containing i carbons per molecule, then ] (-1) i+1 This ratio incorporates the weight percentages of five consecutive alkanes centered about the alkane containing i + 2 carbon atoms. The ratio also may be used to characterize other homologous series such as the normal fatty acids and alcohols.
