At the heart of the hierarchical model of galaxy formation is the interaction between satellite galaxies and the central, or primary, galaxy. Despite numerous simulations of the interactions between satellites and primaries, the answers to many questions regarding the interaction remain uncertain, owing to insufficient observational constraints on the mass models for the satellites. Simulations suggest that dense and compact satellites wreck havoc on the primaries, while fluffy and extended satellites do little damage. We propose B, V and I band imaging observations of the central density profiles of satellite galaxies. Observations of a sample of satellite galaxies (Zaritsky et al. 1997) around isolated spirals will constrain the mass profiles used in simulations, helping us to assess, for example, whether satellite galaxies play a significant role in forming the bulges of galaxies, or contribute to the build-up of stellar halos.
