The use made of image display systems in astronomical data reduction is discussed, and a conceptual model of an image display device that supports these uses and is similar to commonly available hardware is developed. This model was used as the basis for designing a set of image display device interface routines. The interface routines support both low- and high-end display devices and a variety of device configurations. The use of high-end imaging workstations is also supported, although the interface does not attempt to provide a windowing environment. Device configuration choices may be handled via use of one or more standard settings or by use of a negotiated configuration. The interfaces are presented in a language independent fashion with language specific bindings for FORTRAN and C. Several implementations of the early versions of this interface have been built and have demonstrated the practicality of the interface, including the actual port of image display applications software from one device to another.
