A remarkable H I superbubble, 1.5 kpc in size with a mass of 30 million solar, an expansion velocity of 50 km/sec and probably accelerating into the halo, has been found in the nearby spiral galaxy M 101. This is the first clear case of an expanding H I shell associated with a hole in the H I layer. It indicates, beyond any doubt, that this hole is related to energetic phenomena in the disk of the galaxy. The kinetic energy of the H I shell is a few 10 to the 53rd erg, which is the equivalent of at least one thousand supernovae.
