The wavelength coincidence statistics method has been extended by including theoretical line strength estimates based on the Kurucz and Peytremann line data and an appropriate model atmosphere. The authors illustrate this new technique with the spectrum of the HgMn star φ Her which is based on the average of 11 photographic spectra of reciprocal dispersion of 2.4 Å/mm. The 4 elements for which the WCS method gives the highest significance, viz. Ti II, Mn II, Fe II, and Y II, were singled out for detailed conventional abundance investigation. Only unblended lines which were correctly identified down to the estimated lower identification threshold, were used in the subsequent final analysis. The results are compared to those derived by previous authors.
