A spectrum taken during the 'off-state' of a variable extended object near the compact galaxy OX +029 = II Zw 123 shows emission lines at a redshift of 0.048. On the assumption that this light is actually associated with the variable object, the redshift distance implies a physical extent which is not consistent with the reported time scale of variability. As a separate matter, a previously reported BL Lacertae candidate in the field is identified as a foreground star.
