The present expert imaging system (EIS) concept emulates some qualities of human vision that can be used for planetary or space station remote sensing. EIS is an expert knowledge-based controller which supervises and selects that combination of sensor hardware and image-processing methodologies that best fulfill the mission agenda-determined imaging task at hand. The EIS will remain under a degree of human supervision in order to address unpredictable factors. The EIS data volume generated in a high spatial resolution/multispectral panorama will be large enough to allow the definition of spatially limited regions of interest within a scene that contain important spectral properties.
