The first photographic image of a double star was obtained in 1857, at Harvard College Observatory, when Bond and Whipple succeeded in recording the Mizar system on a primitive wet plate. Since that time photography has been increasingly applied to double star astrometry by professional astronomers. This approach has been almost entirely neglected by amateurs. There is nothing inherently difficult in the projection techniques necessary to record double star images on 35mm film, which can be subsequently measured for position angle and separation.
