We propose single-orbit UV spectroscopy of 38 QSOs containing 68 MgII absorption systems. This program will enable us to triple our current sample size for the study of the LyAlpha line in QSO MgII absorption systems with redshift 0.15 < z_abs < 1.65. Observation of such a sample is important for several reasons. First, this redshift range, in which the LyAlpha line is inaccessible from the ground, corresponds to more than half the age of the Universe and has been largely unexplored. Second, it can be used to search for rare damped LyAlpha systems and for the determination of their incidence and properties crucial for constraining theories of galaxy formation. Third, it will lead to follow-up studies of low- redshift absorbers giving rise to damped LyAlpha, which is important because of the link such studies can provide between galaxy research and QSO absorption-line research. Finally, it will provide information on the possible clustering of LyAlpha systems with metal-line systems. Recent results from the HST Quasar Absorption Line Key Project {Bahcall et al. 1994} indicate that such an effect is significant and may correspond to clusters or superclusters of galaxies. This would constitute a new type of constraint on cosmological models of structure formation.
