An exceptionally bright fireball was seen to cross the British Isles on 1992 August 16 at 2148 UT. Because observations were received from a wide area, from the Butt of Lewis in northern Scotland, Tayside, northeastern and central England and the whole of Wales, analysis showed that these observations were not necessarily of the same object. The majority of the observations came from Wales and an analysis of these produced an accurate account of the fireball which crossed that country. It suffered a major fragmentation just before crossing the Lleyn Peninsula and finally faded just west of Anglesey. Observations from elsewhere, in particular Scotland, could not be reconciled with those of the object crossing Wales and it is possible that a second fireball travelled northwards up to the west coast of Scotland, although it has not been possible to deduce accurate details of this event.
