The method of using the correlation function to analyze gamma-ray data from satellite experiments is described. The authors derive exact equations for a correlation analysis using flux values. Exact expressions are given for the standard deviation of the correlated flux σ(Cf) and the parent standard deviation of the underlying background σo of a gamma ray excess in correlation analysis. These can be used to give the standard deviation of the strength and the significance of detection of a point source.
