We propose to complete 2-color (B,R) imaging of a sample of very rich, nearby southern clusters. The project is a multiwavelength optical/radio/X-ray study of a complete sample of (RC>=3, z<=0.16) Abell clusters. The goals of this work are to establish an evolutionary sequence of cluster dynamical activity, and to relate these processes to star formation and AGN activity of the member galaxies. This local sample contains clusters spanning a range of dynamical states and is uncomplicated by cosmological evolution in the galaxy populations. The proposed observations will be used to make optical identifications from our deep radio survey, quantify the optical/X-ray substructure, determine galaxy morphologies, measure the richness (and radio-loud fraction), and provide supporting data for possible optical spectroscopy or other followup work. As these are the very richest nearby clusters (and in most all cases, very poorly studied), these data will also be generally useful for many other studies.
