It is shown that density inhomogeneities do not disturb the oblateness of Venus; however, they completely define the horizontal axes of the three-axis geodetic ellipsoid. The oblateness of Venus is ancient and is supported by a very thick lithosphere (about 900 km thick). If Venus' mantle is very dry, then the planet's lithosphere may be thicker and more rigid than the earth's.
