The present paper modifies the relativistic mean field model proposed by Walecka (1974) to handle differently the short-range interaction induced by the vector meson. There are three parameters in the modified model, which are then fixed by fitting them to the properties of nuclear matter at saturation. The equation of state for pure neutron matter is computed. The present results differ substantially from those obtained by Walecka, but are in line with those obtained from the potential approach. The maximum neutron star mass is found to be 1.7 solar masses.
