The scientific objective of the payload described was to make ultraviolet observations of the solar limb and disk from above the earth's atmosphere. Skylark sounding rocket SL 1004 was the launch vehicle and the observations were carried out above an altitude of 170 km with a total observation time of 200 sec. The payload contains three grazing incidence spectrographs each having a specially developed two-component grazing incidence mirror to image the sun at the entrance slit of the spectrograph. The pointing requirements of the two disk instruments were adequately met by the performance of the sun pointing Attitude Control System (ACS) of the Skylark vehicle. The technical problems presented by this complex payload are outlined, and the methods and tests employed for their solution are described.
