Recent high-resolution radio, optical, and X-ray imagery of the M87 jet indicates the brightness distribution is frequency-independent, implying that the overall jet structure is controlled by the variations in the regular magnetic field along the axis. Bright knots develop at places where the field is enhanced. Interaction with plasma waves there will give some of the relativistic electrons large pitch angles, producing the synchrotron radiation observed in the knots. Plasma is being ejected from the nucleus of this galaxy in a one-sided stream at speeds of order 0.1c.
