It is known that the star-formation rate in spiral galaxies is significantly correlated with the abundance of molecular hydrogen. The present work shows that the fraction of molecular to total gas might be related to the metallicity for about a dozen nearby spirals for which the necessary data are available at present. This enables the authors to formulate an emipirical law of star formation which would be useful in studying the history of the chemical evolution of the above spirals.
