We have obtained synthetic spectra in a grid of temperature, surface gravity, [Fe/H], and [alpha /Fe] in order to investigate the behavior of several absorption features as the model parameters change. The spectra were convolved with a Gaussian in order to simulate the blend of features observed with medium resolution spectroscopy, and we obtained a metallicity ([Fe/H]) from each feature with an empirical fitting function. The features analyzed included Mgb and MgH as well as several Fe features commonly used to determine metallicities from moderate and low resolution spectra of late type stars. The dependence of each feature on the model parameters was used to account for the scatter observed in the [Fe/H] derived, using the same fitting functions, from medium resolution spectra of old open clusters (Friel, E.D. and K.A. Janes, A&A, 1992). In addition, we have used the spectra to analyze the difference between [Fe/H] as derived from the Mg and from the Fe features. This difference has been observed to be a function of age in old open clusters; we have treated it with respect to the dependencies in gravity and [alpha /Fe] enhancement obtained from the synthetic spectra.
