A Cryogenic-camera spectrogram of a 20th mag galaxy only 13arcsec in projection from the well-studied quasar PKS 0405-123 (z = 0.57) shows an unusually strong [O II] emission and the usual λ04000 discontinuity. The inferred redshift is consistent with membership in the quasar cluster/group. A brief semiquantitative analysis indicates that the excess [O II] emission results from the ionization of the interstellar medium in this neighbor galaxy by the UV-radiation from the quasar (some 90 h-1kpc from the galaxy). The emission-line strength of this galaxy represents a rare counter-example to quasar-companion galaxies showing rather weak emission lines.
