There are anomalies in the large-angle cosmic microwave background (CMB) data that do not adhere to the standard cosmological model. The goal of this research is to test such anomalies in order to understand possible causes. We focus in particular on the lack of large-scale fluctuations as quantified by both the low quadrupole and the two-point correlation function, which shows essentially zero correlation on angles greater than about 30 degrees.
One proposed explanation for the large-angle anomalies is eccentricity in the expansion of the Universe. We have performed simulations of models both with and without eccentricity to determine the probability of obtaining as great a lack of large-scale power as is seen in the actual sky. The absence of power is quantified using two standard statistics: the rms quadrupole and by the integral of the square of the correlation function over large angles. In both cases, introducing eccentricity lowers the probability. That is, these models with anisotropic expansion provide an even worse fit to the data than the standard model. In the case of the rms quadrupole, this result can be proved analytically, without need for simulations; however, this is not the case when the correlation function statistic is used.
