The overall energetics of a sunspot is analyzed by a model which takes into account the variation of the gravitational energy of the plasma as a function of the depth of submersion of the sunspot in the photosphere. The magnetic field flux in the field tube and the mass of gas in the cylinder are assumed to be conserved. An expression for the magnetic energy of the sunspot is obtained allowing for the edge effect, and the gravitational and thermal energy of this system is calculated. The equilibrium state and its stability are addressed along with the natural oscillations of the sunspot about the equilibrium position. The results indicate that a sunspot must be considered a relatively 'shallow' formation, and that the variation of the magnetic and gravitational energy of the system makes the main contribution to the energetics of the sunspot.
