We have devised a new technique for performing subpixel dithering by using a charge coupled device's (CCD's) electronics. By permuting the CCD phases used for collection during the integration mode of consecutive images obtained at a single pointing, one may sample an observed scene at the CCD's phase spacing rather than at its pixel spacing thus obtaining a factor of three improvement in spatial resolution for a three-phase CCD, the most commonly deployed format in astronomy. This technique reduces the need for repointing the telescope or instrument, improving operational efficiency, and may be performed with existing multi-phase CCD architectures. We report on the results of an experimental feasibility study that has quantitatively verified the concept.
