The unique problems presented for high-PT physics studies by the very high charge particle and photon densities expected in PbPb Collisions at √S_NN = 5.5 TeV are examined. Trade offs in resolution and linearity in an electromagnetic calorimeter operating in this intense hadron background are studied versus the performance required to meet the physics goals of direct photon and jet physics over the widest possible range of transverse momentum. A conceptual design for a large area Pb-scintillator sampling electromagnetic calorimeter meeting these performance criteria for the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented.
