It is pointed out that the use of echelle spectrographs during the last decade marks a turning point in high-resolution stellar spectrography at optical wavelengths. In the case of an echelle spectrograph, use is made of a blazed grating with relatively few rulings that sends most of the light into a number of high-order spectra. Echelle gratings give a higher dispersion of starlight, and the different wavelengths are separated more effectively. A description is presented of a spectrograph which was built in New Zealand during 1975-76. The instrument is attached to a 24-inch reflector at Mount John Observatory on South Island of New Zealand. The spectrum of Canopus which was obtained during evaluation tests of the Cassegrain echelle spectrograph is also discussed.
