An automatic computational scheme employing Newton's method to solve coupled vector systems of non-linear, parabolic, partial differential equations in one space dimension is presented. The mathematical technique is developed by considering a series of increasingly complicated equations, culminating with applications of the solver to a simplified, but realistic, geophysical problem. Computational aspects of the method are also compared briefly with those of an alternative solver strategy following the ``Method of Lines.'' The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
