The possibility is investigated that certain thermokarsts and fluvial features on Mars are caused by underground melting or melting and freezing of permafrost. The effects of seasonal and of long-term temperature variations on a possible Martian permafrost are analyzed, along with the effects of circumscribed heat sources, such as a lava flow or meteorite impact. The surfaces of the three icebound Galilean satellites are discussed with reference to surface compositions and morphologies possibly related to permafrost and ice. It is concluded that permafrost thawing and freezing cycles due to long-term surficial temperature variations on Mars might be responsible for thermo-burst features south of Chryse Planitia and for the formation of the large polygons in patterned ground, that channels and fluvial features can be explained in terms of permafrost melting, and that the surface of Ganymede is probably covered by a silicate-ice permafrost regolith.
