A systematic search is undertaken in two fields of quasar candidates for alignments similar to those reported by Arp and Hazard (1980), in order to test the statistical significance of these associations. Comparisons with control fields generated by a Monte Carlo technique showed that, when appropriate allowance has been made for clustering, there is only marginal evidence for a statistically significant excess of aligned triplets over that expected by chance. It has not, however, been possible to examine the significance of the redshift patterns found by Arp and Hazard (1980), as reliable redshifts do not exist for the majority of the quasar candidates.
