Data on the distribution of forms of occurrence of iron in the lunar regolith, as obtained via Moessbauer spectroscopy, are evaluated. Advantages and shortcomings of Moessbauer spectroscopy in the examination of lunar samples are outlined. Most of the iron found is present as un-ionized Fe or doubly ionized Fe(II); the Fe(III) state has not been positively identified to date. Relative amounts of iron-containing minerals acquired at the various lunar sites have been determined and related to lunar geological features. Superparamagnetic iron particles in the surface layers of some soil samples are exampled for evidence on their origin and on reduction of Fe(II) to Fe(O) by solar-wind bombardment.
