The radiative power of normal and neutron stars may be estimated by means of the quadrupole formula; the derivation of this formula, however, neglects the self-gravity, internal stress, and internal motion of a source. On the basis of reasonable assumptions concerning the geometry, rotation, internal motion and self-gravity of rotating stars, an explicit expression is derived for the correction of the quadrupole radiation. This correction is found to be of the order of +60 percent in the case of the pulsar PSR 1937 + 214.
